This weekend was my first real test to check my resistance to shop! My parents came down on Saturday, and after a spot of lunch, they decided they would like to pop into town. Up until then I had had no reason to go into the city centre, where as normally I used to just head into town if I was bored and would end up buying all sorts. But now here I was in the Overgate shopping centre, with my mum, who also loves to shop, and the January sales were still on! I'm not going to lie, I picked up lots of items of clothing, none of which I really needed, but... I was good I put them all back and I left town without having bought a single item of clothing!
For anyone who is joining me on this year of not buying clothes, it's important to be practical. Make sure you've been through your wardrobe, and I mean take every item of clothing you own out to remind yourself of what you own, and take it from there. You'll probably surprise yourself with what you own. Everyone has items stuffed in the back some where that you've forgotten about. This will provide you with a little boost. It's almost like buying new clothes, as you're, reuniting yourself with something that you haven't worn in a long time, and that you can pair with other items to create a whole new look without spending a penny!
Unfortunately there's only so many times I can tip my drawers out, and still find exciting things, so this is where my sewing skills are going to come into play!! It's time to start repairing holes, altering, and also making new clothes from scratch. My theory is if I want something new and I can't be bothered to make it, then I obviously don't really need it!
But fear not! Even if you're not a whizz on a sewing machine, there are LOADS of ways to get yourself started! Find your local fabric store, and ask about sewing classes, often cities have have sewing shops, where you can go and rent a machine for a few hours, so just go and have a play.
For beginners my next post is going to be all about what equipment you need to get started, so stay tuned for more details.
Until then stay out the clothes shops!!
